Too Much of a Good Thing

Is it possible??  Is there such a problem as too much of a good thing??  I find this personally plaguing me right now.  Suddenly and without warning, a very good thing happened in my life.  However, instead of basking in the glow of goodness, I’ve felt myself plagued with too much of a good thing.  Is it possible??  Do we need a little bit of sour to go with the sweet in our lives?  Sadly, I think so.

As I was thinking about all the good things in life, I thought about those that could happen in excess.  Is there such a thing as too many nice days?  In Illinois, probably not.  In California, probably so.  Is there such a thing as too much chocolate?  It seems like the answer should most definitely be a loud NEVER but I seem to remember getting tired of M&Ms after about the 30th or not being able to finish a piece of cake because it was too rich.  Drats, foiled again.  There has to be a point where the goodness doesn’t burn out, right?  Right??

Well, they say you can’t have a rainbow without a few drops of rain so perhaps the balance of good and bad is a necessary evil. Now, how do we re-adjust our lives so we aren’t burnt out on the job we love, the compliments from our loved ones, nights out on the town or networking events?

Enter moderation. A little 10 letter word that sends those on any sort of diet into a tailspin. (What do you mean I can only have 1 cookie?? I want 100 cookies!) I think moderation can go beyond food. Too much of a good thing can become annoying, draining or even completely turn you off from what you once loved. Think of your favorite song. Ever put it on repeat and listen to it over and over and over again? At some point, you’ve had enough. You can’t take one more second of the song and, if you’re anything like me, have to go on hiatus from your favorite tune for months.

So, as young professionals, how can we add a little moderation to our lives? Can we say “no” to something that would push us over the edge? Can we relish in the good without over doing it? I think part of moderation is realizing your own set of checks and balances. At what point does your life seem out of control? When are you using every excuse under the sun to just stay home on a Friday night and avoid going out one more time? It’s in these moments that we’ve hit our limit. We’ve thrown moderation to the wind and are stuffing ourselves with the buffet of life.

So, the next time a good thing finds its way into your life, remember, it’s all about moderation otherwise, it’s only a matter of time until you’re turning off your favorite song, putting down the M&Ms and hiding out away from the world in your room. After all, too much of a good thing can be just disastrous.
