Picnic in the Park

This weekend my husband and I decided to enjoy the beautiful weather and go on a picnic to Rock Cut State Park. We live very close to the bike paths, so we decided to get a nice workout in and bike there. I am so glad we did, because the scenery was beautiful!  We got on at Harlem High School, which is a great location if you don’t live close. They have a nice parking lot right by the path where you can park, and if you haven’t been on a bike in a long time, the distance isn’t too far.

On the bike path you see some beautiful scenery. There are lots of trees to keep you out of the sun and the small creeks and rivers provide a peaceful setting. Once we got to Rock Cut, we found a nice shaded spot overlooking the lake. There were lots of people fishing and boating on the lake, and we saw a lot of hikers on the trails. After lunch we just sat and relaxed, taking in the scenery and enjoying a quiet moment in our busy lives. It was nice to spend some time doing something different and enjoying the beauty of Rock Cut.

This week I would love to hear from our Ignite members! What is your favorite outdoor spot in Rockford and why?

  1. I was out at Rock Cut with a friend on Sunday! We rented a canoe and rowed it out to the middle of the lake, where we floated and dangled our feet in the water for over an hour. It was heaven!! It was only $10 an hour to rent a canoe out there, so we’ll definitely do it again before it gets too cold. We also went hiking and walked all the way around the lake. We were exhausted by the end of the day, but we both agreed it was one of the best days we’d had in a while.

  2. I love Rock Cut too. Such a great park and so much to explore that are unknown to most. Another great outdoor location is Kishwaukee River, which is great for tubing, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. I love looking out over the Old Perryville Bridge and walking the trails. This area is great for furry friends too!
