Putting the “Date” Back in Dating

IGNITE’s social media expert Anthea Halsey, who writes the Trending Topics column for the Inspire Rockford blog, sent me a link to a new dating site that actually brings back the emphasis on going on dates. It’s called  How About We, and it’s a dating site that focuses on things you like to do — then on finding someone to do them with you.

Rather than sitting at your computer browsing through hundreds of dating profiles, the site allows you to propose dates or browse date ideas, then message people to see if they’d like to go with you. Feel like going out dancing but tired of asking your friends to be your platonic dates? In the mood for a game of bowling or want to see the latest slasher film? Chances are, there’s someone else out there who’s in the mood to do the same thing. And who knows — maybe after finding out you like doing the same things, a friendship could emerge and potentially lead to something more. And isn’t that what dating is all about?

The site sounds much more like “real life” dating than your average online dating site, only the pool of people you could potentially ask out (or who could ask you out) has just become so much bigger. And you know they’re interested in being asked out because they’re on the site. Even better.

The downside? This is so new, it’s only available in New York. Darn New Yorkers always getting the cool stuff first! I’ve already signed up just to show my interest as a non-New Yorker. Who knows — maybe if enough Rockfordians try to sign up for the site, the developers will see a market for it in our area and give us a chance to try it out, too. Although I do admit the thought of meeting up with a stranger for a movie without at least having a chat on the phone first freaks me out a bit, but the concept of the site intriques me so much, I at least like the chance to see what kind of opportunities crop up in our area. After all, life’s too short not to take a few chances here or there.

What do you think of this latest development in online dating?

Love and leaps of faith,

Mika

  1. So interesting!! Seriously, what will they think of next?? Love it because if nothing else, you could so most definitely find a friend that loves to do what you love to do! Every now and then I find I want to go do something but don’t really have a friend with the same interest so this site would be completely perfect!! Interesting…. Great find Mika!!

    • Thanks, Caitlin! I wish I could take credit, but it was totally Anthea’s find. And I’m the same way, too. There are so many times I want to go do something, but my challenge is finding someone who 1) wants to do it, too, and 2) has the time to go. Maybe someday it’ll make its way to Rockford.

  2. Great post Mika! This is a website I will have to try out!

Out of curiosity, do you have any experience with speed dating. If you do that would make a great topic for discussion.

    • Thanks, Darold! It’s not something you can try out yet since it’s only available in New York, but if you sign up anyway, it shows people in Rockford are also interested in giving it a shot. And I have never actually tried speed dating, but I’m considering it just to be able to write about it here. I have to say I’m a little reticent to try it!
