The Republic of Haiti

For Black History Month, I’d thought I would get the ball rolling by giving a brief history on a country that’s been in the news a lot lately:  the Republic of Haiti.

Haiti occupies the Western half of the island of Hispaniola (with the Dominican Republic occupying the Eastern half). Originally named Saint Domingue, Haiti is a very significant country in that is is the first independent nation in Latin America, and the second oldest nation in the Western Hemisphere (after the United States).  It is the first Black-led republic in the world when it gained independence as the result of a successful slave rebellion in 1804.  The rebellion was led by Francois-Dominique Toussaint L’Ouverture, who himself was a former slave.
